Obituary of Marc Oliver Matthiensen

Please share a memory of Marc to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marc Oliver Matthiensen March 17, 1968 - September 7, 2022 Marc left us peacefully to be with the Lord too soon while visiting family in Germany. He was 54. Marc was always a bright light in all of our lives. Born in Ratingen Germany, Marc moved with his family in 1972 to Rye, New York. He was a Graduate of Brunswick High School in Greenwich, CT. Marc attended Skidmore College and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History & Government with Phi Alpha Theta Honors in History. He received a Masters Degree from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. Marc enjoyed boating, baseball, history, writing and aviation. An avid history buff, he gained knowledge of the Civil War, WWI and WWII. Marc would visit Germany to spend time with family and pursue personal interests. There, as a late teen he attended Glider Pilot Training School and flew many solo flights towards his certification. He took great interest and showed incredible respect acknowledging his grandparents and parents journeys as they endured the hardships of war and the paths to freedom. Marc is also defined by his true essence as a loving, lively, jovial, and giving person. His clever jokes, loud laughter and great conversations will be remembered. He had great desire to spend quality time with his parents, many family members, great friends and colleagues. He would always make the time. The speeches he would write and deliver at birthdays and holiday gatherings will never be forgotten. He had much love to give, and he made us all feel better. As an adult, Marc lived in New York City for over 20 years. He enjoyed the Arts, Museums, Concerts, Sporting Events, and Fine Dining. He was an active member of the Down Town Association, and the American Council of Germany. Marc was very interested in Baseball history. Visiting Cooperstown on a number of occasions, he gained knowledge of the Negro Leagues, and old time baseball before the inception of the MLB. He was well read on the history of the game in America. He was a big fan of the New York (baseball) Giants who played at the Polo Grounds in NYC. Marc accepted an offer to play in the Metro Area Vintage Baseball League as a member of the New York Gothams. Their home field was in Central Park. These games were accurately played with vintage felt uniforms, bare handed play with no catching glove, primitive bats and vintage gear. He loved it ! The team gave him the nickname "Dutch" and he played at many positions, also common in the vintage game. His work career led him to the financial services field where he held positions in sales of software development tools for financial programmers. He gained industry honors as the recipient of the 2021 Field Services Award at WSO2, building long-term relationships with his customers at Bessemer Trust, Pershing LLC, New York Life, BNY Mellon, and Marsh McLennan. His customers appreciated his focus on excellent customer service and his consultative approach to selling software solutions. We are all proud of his award and achievements. Marc is survived by his Mother, Gerlinde Angst of Gondelsheim, Germany, Father, Ernst R. Matthiensen and wife Stephanie of Key Biscayne Florida, Sister, Sophie B. Cirillo and Frank Cirillo of Darien Connecticut, Brother and Sister in Law, Alexander and Maggie Schmuck of Mamaroneck NY, Nieces, Caroline Cirillo and Lucie Schmuck, Nephews Cameron Cirillo (Marc's Godson) and Thomas Schmuck, Aunt Hannelore and Uncle Mathias Merle, Cousins, Peter Grueterich, Karin Fry, Christopher Merle, and families.
