Obituary of Edward James Waters

Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Edward James Waters of Darien, Connecticut passed away on January 12, 2022. He was 80 years old. He was the son of the late Frederick Joseph Waters and Mary Agnes Slattery, and the brother of the late Frederick Joseph Waters Jr. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Ann Shields (Michael Shields) and Brenda Mahoney.

Ed grew up in Scarsdale, New York, leaving to attend St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, New York. After graduating, he received his law degree from Fordham Law School, where he met our mother, Patricia Mulligan, at a mixer. They married soon after and began their family of six, just as my father was accepted into the Wharton School of Business on a full scholarship. He emerged from Wharton and began a lifelong career at Kidder, Peabody & Co. for 18 years as a Managing Director of Corporate Finance. He was also a board member of Domtar Paper Co, LLC. In his seventies, he opened his own law firm, E. Waters and Associates practicing foreclosure law.

Ed loved getting to know people, animals, history, trip planning, Bonnie’s basketball, Notre Dame football, taking pictures of his family, a cold beer in a cold glass, fine clothes, geography, a juicy steak with extra sauce, books, and being on the water. He was forever telling stories with the gift of being able to laugh at himself. He was a natural orator. He was larger than life, bold and confident to the end. He was exceptionally generous and loyal, uniquely able to make everyone around him feel important, loved and cared for. Above all, he was passionate about his family. There was no better protector and guardian angel. He was one of a kind.

Ed is survived by the love of his life, Patricia Waters of New Canaan, CT; his children and their spouses, Tricia Waters and Scott Ross of Ridgefield, CT; Amy and David Youkilis of Bellingham, MA; Ted Waters and Laura Jayson of Rowayton, CT; Jennifer and Ian MacAllister of New Canaan, CT; Lauren Waters of New Canaan, CT; Erin and Jon Trepanier of New Canaan, CT; and his 20 grandchildren, Jessica (24), Jack (22), Benjamin (20), Charlotte (20), William (16), Isabelle (16), Scott (15), Tristan (13), Skylar (13), Scarlett (11), Annabelle (10), Lilly (9), Kieran (8), Sawyer (7), Jayson (7), Violet (6), Bailey (5), Edward (3), Pearl (2) and Laela (2).

Please join us in celebrating our father’s magnificent life with a wake service at Lawrence Funeral Home in Darien, Connecticut on Monday, January 24th from 5-8 pm. His memorial service will be at 11:30 am at St. Aloysius Church on Tuesday, January 25th in New Canaan, Connecticut. Zoom will be available.
