Obituary of Douglas Heywood Calby

Please share a memory of Douglas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Douglas Heywood Calby, a 26 year Darien resident, died at home in Darien on July 14, 2013. Born on September 29th, 1959 he was the son of Diana Heywood Calby of Yarmouth, ME and the late Joseph W. Calby. One sister, Ann Calby Miller of Cambridge, MA, also survives Doug. Doug was a graduate of Cornell University and spent his entire career at Accenture in a variety of roles, most recently as Managing Director Technologies America, before retiring in 2009. Doug was a loving husband, father, son and brother who cherished family and friends and liked nothing better than creating outings to see plays, play golf, or travel. A good bottle of wine or two was nearly always involved. The pace of activity picked up after retirement and Doug worked hard to earn his family nickname as "The Cruise Director". Doug was passionate about Cornell University, and was a active volunteer for the University, serving on the Cornell Council, various fundraising roles, and most recently serving as the Executive in Residence for Cornell's Career Services Office. In this role, Doug made it his personal mission to come to campus for one on one meetings with students, sharing advice and mentoring hundreds of students as they worked to advance their individual career and life goals. Doug was a faithful member of Noroton Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and most recently as the Chair of the Foundations for the Future Mission Grant team. Working tirelessly with this team to source and assess mission partners, Doug provided unwavering leadership in identifying Christ-driven ministries for NPC's support. One of his favorite trips was to Jordan to meet with a missionary supporting Christians in the Gaza strip. Doug loved and cherished his wife Karen through thick and thin. There were too many hospitals involved along the way, but they were always together on the journey with a lot of love, respect and humor. He adored his children, Chris and Liz, and used his retirement years to participate as actively as he could in their lives, which usually meant spectating at a sports event, often more than one in a single day. He was a faithful fan and water cooler carrier, and was known among their teammates for showing up at every game (even those in places like Oregon and Australia) and was always good for supporting a meal for the team. He fully embraced life at Dartmouth College, where both children attended, and over time, green started to hold its own against red in his wardrobe. A self-proclaimed "non-social" guy, he had legions of friends that he kept up with, organizing the Cornell Fiji guys for get-togethers and skiing, flying to places like the Philippines to see old work buddies, and having regular lunches and golf dates at Merion with his closest friends. He enjoyed building a house in Yarmouth, Maine, his favorite place in the world and had planned on welcoming friends there, just as he did at Kiawah Island, a close second on the favorite places list. Doug was a member of CCD, Merion Golf Club and the Kiawah Island Club. Doug will be remembered for his intellect, integrity and honesty, loyalty and humor. He will be deeply missed. A Memorial Service will be held at Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Post Road, Darien on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
