Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary U. Metzger, 77, a Darien resident for 60 years, passed away in Greenwich Hospital on Thursday, November 22, 2007, after a lengthy illness.
Born January, 3rd, 1930, in Newark, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Gladys Westerman Metzger. Mary was predeceased by her sister, Marcia Metzger Sparkes (1951) and brother, Kenneth Metzger (1977).
Mary worked as a bookkeeper with her father and brother at the family owned Brooklyn Desk Co. which became Bestype Office Furniture in NYC. When the business was sold, she went to work for D.D.A.I. in NYC. She later decided to join her brother at his company, Connecticut Desk Co. in Darien, CT., where she remained for 17 years until her retirement in 1992.
She loved, cared for and watched over all her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children. In turn, she was considered to be much more than just an aunt. She was loved and thought of as a “grand-parent”. She was affectionately known as “Granmare” to her extended family. To all others, Mary was thought of as a kind and generous friend who will be greatly missed.
Mary is survived by 6 nieces and nephews, Cynthia Sparkes Hughes, Michael Metzger, Marcia Metzger Kavanewsky, Debbie Metzger, Susan Metzger Vitti, and Greg Metzger. She is also survived by 10 great-nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas More R.C. Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien on Saturday, December 1st, 2007, at 10:00 AM. Internment will immediately follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien, CT. Arrangements are being handled by Lawrence Funeral Home.
