Obituary of Buell M. Brooks

Buell M. Brooks, a resident of Darien for 30 years, passed away on August 27, 2011 in Fairfield, Connecticut. He was 91 years old. Born on February 6, 1920 in Great Falls, Montana, he grew up in Alhambra, California where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout as a boy. He graduated the University of California at Los Angeles with a degree in Industrial Relations shortly before the outbreak of World War II. He enlisted in the US Navy, serving as Communications Officer on several destroyers in the South Pacific theatre. Lieutenant Commander Brooks received the Bronze Star at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines.
Returning home, Mr. Brooks entered advertising and worked for Scripps-Howard Newspapers in San Francisco, Chicago, and New York before retiring as Director of Promotion and Research, capping a 35 year career. As someone who enjoyed being around people all his life, he remained active after retiring from the advertising business. He continued employment relationships with J C Penney, Brinks Corp., and FAO Schwarz until the age of 80.
Mr. Brooks is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Mary Jane. He is survived by his sister Isabelle, of Huntington Beach, California; by three children: a son Noel, of New Canaan, daughter Candace and son Scott, both of Stratford; and six grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien is planned for Tuesday, September 6 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Connecticut Affiliate, 5 Brookside Drive, P. O. Box 5022, Wallingford, CT 06492.
