Edward Schildnecht of New Bern, NC passed away at home on Friday, May 24, 2024.  He was 91.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. Schildnecht and Beatrice Ellen Schildnecht, brother Charles W. Schildnecht, Jr., sister-in-law Bernice Schildnecht, sister Mildred Schildnecht and son-in-law Carleton W. Todd, II.  He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, June Zikias Schildnecht and his children; son Edward J. Schildnecht (Lorraine) of Darien, CT, daughters Lisa A. Todd of New Bern, NC and Kathy J. Beckel (Steven) of New Bern, NC; grandchildren Meghan Beckel Bailey (Matthew), Christina M. Beckel, Sydney N. Schildnecht and Edward J. Schildnecht, III; great-grandchildren, Penelope and Genevieve Bailey and Adrian Nicolas along with much-loved family and friends.

 

Edward was born and raised in Darien, Connecticut, graduating from Darien High School in 1951.  He then enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served until August of 1953.  He returned to Darien to marry the love of his life, June, and raise his family.   Edward joined the Darien Police Department in August of 1959, retiring at the rank of Sergeant after 20 years of service.  His career continued as manager of building security for McGraw-Hill Publishing in their New York headquarters, retiring in 1993.

 

In 1994, Ted and June moved to New Bern, NC.  Their retirement was spent with the many new friends they made in their golfing community, travelling extensively and enjoying their grandchildren. 

 

Edward spent much of his life in service to others through his Naval service, police duties, as a volunteer firefighter, caring for elderly relatives, as a loving father and grandfather.  He was always someone who could be counted upon to be there.  He enjoyed life to the fullest and shared countless stories of a life well-lived.  He will be missed.

 

A memorial service will be held at Lawrence Funeral Home on August 10th at 2p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
