Dear Pat,
We so enjoyed being with you and John at the Waveny concert on Jul 5th. John's love of Fordham was so evident and it was a privilege hearing him share his stories and experiences during his college years. I send you our deepest condolences and heart-felt thanks for his loyaly to Fordham over these many years. As he would say to me after we would meet 'Go RAMS'.
On behalf of Fordham University, please accept our thoughts and prayers as you move forward into this next chapter.
With warm regards,
Hope Ogletree

My sincerest condolences to the family. I have so many fond childhood memories of playing at the Podkowsky's house on Barringer Road--playing in the steam, swimming in the pool, running around the backyard. Mr. Podkowsky was a kind, loving man and he will be greatly missed.
With love,
Carolyn Axt

What Would Pod Think?
That was what we in Citi’s Asset Based Finance Group wondered as we structured our deals. We didn’t wonder what John Reed would think or Sandy Weil or Chuck Prince or Vikram Pandit or Bob Rubin or Tommy Maharas or Randy Barker or Chad Leat or even Dick Trask . It was enough to ask ourselves “What would John think?” If he supported your deal, getting the approval of any other higher up would be a cake walk.
Mark Minter introduced me to Pod in 1992 and shortly thereafter I became a proud member of what would become known as the Pod Squad – the unofficial name for a group of bankers that overtime included Keith Karako, Shap Smith, Tom Halsch, Peter Briggs, Frank Babio, Brenda Cotsen, Dave Reynolds, Richard Banziger, Judith Fishlow, Barbara Matas, Julie Persily, Jeff Nitz, Michael Schadt and David Jaffe and who did many of Citi’s most extraordinary corporate financings at the turn of this century. The Ocean’s Eleven crew had nothing on us.
John was a great boss for me for 15 years. You might find bankers who appeared to be more charismatic but none had his combination of leadership clarity, supportiveness, discipline and heart.
One example of this happened late one night while I was working on a bankruptcy financing that needed to be completed by the end of the next day. It was after midnight and negotiations between us, the client, their advisors, lawyers, and other bankers had broken down so Pod went home to CT. A couple of hours later, those of us left behind thought of a potential solution so I risked calling Pod even if it meant waking him up to see if he could agree to what we had devised. No one answered. I realized he must take his hearing aids out when sleeping so I called Shap who lived a couple miles away from him and asked if he would mind going over to Pod’s house and try to wake him up. A weary Shap did that and after knocking on the doors and windows of Pod’s house and ringing doorbells and waking the entire household, the two of them called me back at 3:30 am. John provided just the right response and support. He then thanked me for my tenacity and for reaching out to him. I’m not sure Pat or his sons felt the same way.
Another example of his leadership style happened after 9/11. Nearly everyone on the team had been working at 388 Greenwich St. that morning and by 9:30 had been told to evacuate the building. The iconic 10 story tall Traveler’s umbrella sign on the face of the building was thought to be a potential target. Although we could not communicate with each other the rest of that day, Pod had as many of us as possible together on the phone at 10:30 the next morning.
· Was everyone ok?
· Was there anyone not on the call that was not ok or not accounted for?
· Who lived alone that might need a friend?
· If yes, could one of the rest of us go find them and help them?
We had that same call at 10:30 every single morning for the next month. Those calls were a lifeline for us all. With voices often quivering, even his own, Pod gave everyone the time and space to tell their own story about what they saw and experienced and what they were worried about. He didn’t try to be any of our dads but we were definitely on his team and he was definitely going to do everything he could to make sure we were all ok. His tone was perfect.
After the first few days, the questions soon changed to:
· Who had an extra bed to offer to anyone who couldn’t go back to their apartment?
· Who needed cash?
· Who needed one of us to call their family especially if they were in another country?
· Who could go to the bank’s command post in the Meadowlands?
· Who would be willing to go back to 388 with him when the building opened back up?
I have missed working for John and I will never forget him or the ever present plaque on his desk that almost demanded you to be selfless and kind:
“There is no limit to what a person can accomplish as long as they don’t mind who gets the credit.”
It says a lot about the man he was.

I’m so very sorry and sad to hear of John’s passing.
My deepest sympathy to his wife, family and friends.
I worked with and for John for 20 years at CITI in NYC from the ‘80’s to the early 2000’s.
He was a great leader who led our “ABF” department through many things including 9/11.
John was supportive, encouraging, warm, friendly and I’ll never forget how he supported me when I really needed it. I’ll also never forget his warm smiles and how he liked to dance at our holiday parties.
I’m glad and blessed to have known John.
May the Good Lord hold John, his wife his children, family and friends in His care. May good memories comfort them at this difficult time.
May John Rest In Peace.
