Elizabeth Wentworth Pierpont passed away peacefully on March 18, 2023, at the age of 93. Known as Betsy, she was the daughter of Elizabeth C. and Thomas F. Wentworth. She was predeceased by Carleton L. Pierpont, her loving husband of 50 years, in 2008 and two siblings, Thomas F. and Virginia Wentworth.
A resident of Darien for nearly 60 years, Betsy was born in Greenwich, CT in 1929, the third of four children, and grew up in Garden City, NY. She attended The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, MD, where she lived with her great aunt and uncle, and Vassar College before moving to New York City where she worked at B. Altman and Company and J. Walter Thompson.
She met Carleton on a blind date to the Harvard-Yale football game. They married in 1959 and had three children in under three years while living in three different states: Grosse Pointe, MI, Litchfield, CT and Charlottesville, VA.
Betsy and Carleton raised their family in Darien and were longtime members of The Tokeneke Club and the Harvard Club of New York City. She was a member of Saint Luke's Parish, where she taught Sunday school for several years, and she worked part-time at P R Data Services and Entre Nous, a gift and needlepoint boutique. Betsy was a longtime volunteer for various local organizations, including the Children's Aid of Darien, the Darien Community Association and the Family and Children's Agency of Norwalk.
Betsy is remembered for her warmth, compassion and integrity. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who took a keen interest in others and always made those around her feel valued. Her thoughtful observations, interesting stories and delightful sense of humor were enjoyed by everyone. Betsy's passing leaves a large void in the hearts of her family and friends, but her legacy of love, kindness and generosity endures.
Betsy is survived by her sister, Alexandra Tatnall of Princeton, NJ and her three children: Elizabeth P. Engstrom and husband Erik of London, UK, Alexander T. Pierpont of Brookline, MA and Samuel L. Pierpont and wife Renée of Darien. She is also survived by her six adoring grandchildren: E. Langley Pierpont, Annika E.P. Engstrom, Alexander B.P. Engstrom, Gemma L. Pierpont, Emily K.L. Pierpont and Hanna E.W. Pierpont, in addition to nieces and nephews and their children.
A service in honor of Betsy will be held at Saint Luke's Parish 1864 Post Rd in Darien on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 11:00am.
