I was lucky to share many, many fun times with the Smith family while growing up in Huntington. With Jen as my best friend, I got the bonus of knowing Mr. Smith, Judy, and Greg. I'll always remember Mr. Smith and his booming laugh, brightly colored pants and shorts (several with lobster print, many madras), and love of music (from show tunes to Tina Turner), cars, and grilling. One late spring evening in 1987, Jen and Mr. Smith pulled up to my house and honked. I went outside to find Jen at the wheel of her dad's prized dark green 1969 Ford Mustang. She'd just earned her learner's permit. What a perfect teenage rite-of-passage moment, I remember thinking then. And now, as a parent, I see it also as a generous and brave gesture on Mr. Smith's part! I'm grateful to have known such a kind and loving soul. I'm sending a big hug to the Smith family. Please know I'll be there in spirit on May 20.

I guess Ill always consider Mr. Steve my first employer. Mr. Steve was a nextdoor neighbor growing up who hired me to mow his grass for him. I didnt do a very good job and didnt do it as often as I should have but he always paid up front and treated me with the love only a grandparent or parent could show. He played an integral role on the street I grew up on. He was always there for the neighborhood parties and spontaneous gatherings and always energetic and happy to see everyone. He also came to the state Taekwondo Championship to watch me compete and it meant the world to me and still does. I wish i kept in contact with him over the years so I could tell him I got much better at mowing yards. His Abbeydale Way children, brothers, and sisters will miss him dearly.
