I had several--mostly brief--interactions with Mr. Crandall over the years, as I was a good friend of David Jr's and would often stop by his house before heading out for the evening. I recall entering the house on Hollow Tree Ridge Rd throughout high school and college and always receiving a warm greeting from Mr. Crandall. He'd often add, "there's plenty of beer in the fridge, boys." One time upstairs, Dave and I were trying to get out the door, but Dave was called back by his dad to take care of something he evidently had neglected. Mr. Crandall's tone was commanding, but I'm sure his bark was worse than his bite. Whatever it was, Dave took care of it right away. ;-)
Many years later in my early 40s, Dave and I headed over to the beautiful house in Rowayton after a stint at Ernie's. Mr. Crandall swiftly made us some gin & tonics and regaled us with stories and observations for a good hour or two. He was a warm, kind man, and I'll miss him.

The thing I will always cherish about my uncle Dave is his warmth, caring, and humor. I can picture arriving at Jane and Dave’s house by the golf course in Darien. Uncle Dave always greeted me no matter how chaotic the scene was with kids running around and so many others to talk to. When I was old enough, he’d get me a Bloody Mary and give me his full attention to ask what I was up to, how I was doing, and share in a humorous observation or two. I always knew Uncle Dave was on my side. Imagine the influence he had others as I’m sure he did this with so many people over so many years. He will be sorely missed and deeply celebrated.
