Obituary of George W. Hill, Sr.
George W. Hill, Sr., a long time Darien resident, died Sunday, October 30, 2011 at home after a very long illness. He was 84.
Mr. Hill was born on August 20, 1927 in Middletown, Connecticut. He grew up on the west side of Middletown, Connecticut in what is now the area next to Wesleyan University. Mr. Hill was the son of the late Thomas John Hill and Nellie Peterson Hill.
Mr. Hill served in the United States Army during World War II as a PFC in Company I, 38th Infantry, 2nd Division. Originally stationed at Camp Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado he later served in the North Atlantic.
Mr. Hill joined the Noroton Height Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1952. At his death he had been an active member for 59 years. Over the years he served the department in a variety of positions including being elected Chief in 1969 and subsequently serving as the department's President and Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Mr. Hill was employed by the Town of Darien for many years as the Building Inspector until his retirement in 1992. He also served the town as its Planning and Zoning Officer and served on the Zoning Board of Appeals. In 1976 he served as the President of the State of Connecticut Building Officials Association.
Mr. Hill was a Darien Little League manager for 16 years and was a charter member and co-commissioner of the Darien Jr. Football League. He will long be remembered for his dedication to his family and for his contributions to the community of Darien.
Mr. Hill was predeceased by his parents, sister Helen Dillon and brother Leroy Hill. He is survived by two brothers John Hill of Cromwell, Connecticut and Earl Hill of Portland, Connecticut, his beloved wife of 61 years Joyce Canto Hill of Darien, two sons Stephen T. Hill and his wife Michelle of Milford, Connecticut and George W. Hill, Jr. and his wife Deborah of Waco, Texas, and four grandchildren Michael, Matthew, Christopher and Jennifer Hill.
Calling hours will be at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, Connecticut on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. John's Roman Catholic Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien, Connecticut at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, November 3, 2011.
