Obituary of James C. B. Millard, Jr.

As he was known to all who knew and loved him, ‘Big Jim’ Millard died of natural causes on December 3, 2005 at the age of 84. He resided in Norwalk, CT. He was born in Brooklyn on June 8, 1921, the eldest son of 6 children of James C. B. Millard and Mary Orr Millard. He was raised in Ridgewood, NJ. He received his BA from The College of the Holy Cross in 1942. After serving as a pilot in World War II in the United States Navy, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, he went to the Columbia University Law School where he earned his LLB degree. He also served his country in the Korean War. As a young attorney he worked in the Corporation Counsel’s Office of the City of New York and the District Attorney’s Office. He went on to build a distinguished legal practice with the law firm of Webb & Knapp where he concentrated on real estate contract law. He was highly regarded by his peers and involved in some of the country’s most complex and creative development transactions including the assemblage of the land on which sits today’s United Nations Headquarters in New York City. On October 3, 1946 he married his true love, Mary Cotter. Together they raised three children in Larchmont, NY and at their beloved mountain retreat in Windham, NY. He will always be remembered for his larger than life optimism and his unshakable devotion to his magnificent wife, Mary, who died after a long trial with Alzheimer’s disease on February 2, 2002. He is survived by his 3 children: Mary Camille Tole of Darien, CT; James of Darien, CT, and; Patricia Ann Millard of Windham, NY, and by 6 grandchildren: Suzanne Tole Webster of Lexington, KY; Cynthia Tole Miller of Fairfield, CT; K. Flynn Millard of Jackson, WY; Anne Brady Millard of Darien, CT; Elizabeth Callanan Millard of Darien, CT, and; Kristoffer Barker of Darien, CT. He was blessed to have known 5 great-grandchildren: Henry, Annabel and Claudia Webster of Lexington, KY and Wyatt & Callanan Miller of Fairfield, CT. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John’s RC Church, Darien, CT, 06820 on Friday December 9, 2005 at 10 AM.
