Obituary of Jeanette May Macomber Kellogg

“What we enjoyed and deeply loved, we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us”. Jeanette May Macomber Kellogg (“Goodlie”, “Gammie”) died on March 25, 2006 at the age of 95. She was born in West Norwalk on May 10, 1910 to Charles Sanford Macomber and Jesse Van Dyke Macomber. She spent her early childhood at the family’s West Norwalk farm, and at the age of 6, moved to Darien. Mrs. Kellogg attended Old Royle School, Hindley Junior High School, and was a member of the first graduating class of Darien High School in 1927. She graduated from the Fannie A. Smith Kindergarten Training School and was a kindergarten teacher for 18 years. In 1930 she co-founded the “Greenlawn School”, a nursery/kindergarten/pre-first grade school in Darien, CT. In 1937 she married Alvah Bruce Kellogg, a successful building and land developer. Mrs. Kellogg and her husband settled on Bluff Avenue in Rowayton, overlooking Long Island Sound, where the family lived for almost 60 years. Mrs. Kellogg’s interests and accomplishments included caring for and raising her two sons, gardening, bird watching and crafts. She had 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren whom she loved to entertain. She was involved with some local charities including the Darien Book Aid, Person to Person and Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Darien and especially loved volunteering her talents for their Annual Early Settlers Fair. In 1995 she moved to Wilton to live with family. She lived happily and comfortably, surrounded by her family in her cozy house, affectionately called “Stonecote”. Mrs. Kellogg was beloved by all whose lives she touched, but most especially her son Sanford Kellogg of Wilton, wife Susan and their children: Sanford Jr., Tucker, Paige and Whitney, their spouses and children; her son Jonathan Kellogg of Norwalk, wife Pamela and Jon’s daughters Elizabeth and Victoria, their husbands and children. Calling hours will be on Friday, March 31 at Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Rd., Darien, CT. from 3-5pm and 6-8pm. A memorial service celebrating the life of our Goodlie will begin at 11:00am on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at the First Congregational Church, 14 Brookside Rd., Darien, CT. Interment will be private.
