Obituary of Edward Thomas McGettigan, Sr.

Edward Thomas McGettigan, Sr., beloved husband, father and grandfather, died suddenly at home early Wednesday morning, September 6, 2006. He was 81. Mr. McGettigan is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine McGettigan; sons James McGettigan of Bloomsburg, PA; Edward McGettigan, Jr. of Norwalk, CT; daughters, Susan Carroll of New Canaan, CT and Joan McGettigan also of New Canaan. He also leaves five grandchildren, Molly Carroll, Fisher McGettigan, James Edward McGettigan, Avery McGettigan and Brady McGettigan. He is also survived by one brother, John McGettigan of California. Mr. McGettigan was a founding partner, President and Chief Executive Officer of American Transit Insurance Company in Manhattan, an insurance firm insuring the majority of taxi business in New York City. Over the past 34 years, Mr. McGettigan built American Transit to the large, successful firm it is today, known for its high integrity and customer service. He was born April 21, 1925 in the Bronx, NY, the son of the late Charles and Marie McGettigan. He attended Villanova University and Fordham Preparatory School. Mr. McGettigan was a decorated World War II and Korean War Veteran. Mr. McGettigan was a beloved figure who contributed greatly to his community and church through philanthropy, coaching the Flintford Cubs in Larchmont to a pennant victory in the late 60’s and speaking at various schools about his war experience. Mr. McGettigan was a man of eclectic interest, known for his enthusiastic ownership of both thoroughbred and standardbred horses, his love of poetry, and his deep and abiding faith. Friends may call at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Thursday, September 7, 2006 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM and Friday, September 8, 2006 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Matthews R.C. Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks contributions be made to Fordham Prep., East Fordham Road, Bronx, NY 10458-5175 or Belmont Child Care Association, 2150 Hempstead Turnpike, Belmont Park, Elmont, NY 11003.
