Obituary of Arne Nielsen, Sr.

Arne Nielsen Sr. of Stamford, a caterer and long time resident, died Saturday evening, April 28 at Stamford Hospital. He was 94 years old. Mr. Nielsen was born in Oslo, Norway on June 6, 1912, a son of the late Bernard Nielsen and Solveig Ragna Hansen Nielsen. An area resident since 1950, he attended schools in Norway and the United States. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church He spent 20 years sailing abroad freighters, ocean liners and in the Merchant Marines during WWII as a cook and chief steward. After the war was over, he came to Stamford and worked as a caretaker and cook on an estate there for many years. Later he ran his own catering business. He also worked for a time as a painting contractor. Mr. Nielsen was predeceased by his wife, Dora. He is survived by two sons, Arnie Nielsen of Stamford; John Nielsen and his wife Tina of New Windsor, NY; a grandson, Arnie Lars Nielsen and his wife Karen of Bethel; a great granddaughter, Danielle Nielsen also of Bethel. He is also survived by two sisters, Elsa May Nielsen and Ragnhild Nielsen Larsen of Norway. He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He was instrumental in founding the Skaugum Lodge of the Sons of Norway in Stamford and served as the president for the first 5 years. He was also a Sons of Norway convention delegate on many occasions and participant in many Norwegian parades in Brooklyn, NY. He also contributed time and funds to The Land of the Vikings, a Norwegian Cultural Center in Sherman, PA. “Arne was a kind, gentle, unassuming, and caring man, who deeply loved his family and will be greatly missed,” said his sons. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on 884 Newfield Avenue in Stamford on Saturday, May 12 at 10:30 AM. Burial will be at Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford.
