Obituary of Charles Sovek

Charles Sovek, 70, internationally known artist and popular workshop teacher, died unexpectedly on June 8th in Norwalk. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on March 23, 1937 and began his life- long love of paint in 1956. In the 50’s and 60’s he attended The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and Art Student’s League of New York prior to relocating to Connecticut in the late 60’s. Over the past 25 years, Mr. Sovek has written several well-received art books including “Painting Indoors”, Catching Light in your Paintings”, “Oil Painting: Develop your Natural Ability”, and “The Basics”. As a contributing editor to The Artist’s Magazine, he wrote dozens of feature articles and through his publishing enterprise, BACK PORCH PRESS, he authored books on aspects of artistic life. Widely traveled, he painted, exhibited and taught throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada and Europe. He was connected to art associations in Provincetown; Rowayton; Rockport, MA; Cincinnati; Mendocino as well as holding the honor of Emeritus Member of Plein Air Painters of America. Galleries currently showing his work include Addison Gallery, Orleans, MA; South Street Gallery, Hingham, MA; and Anne Irwin Fine Art in Atlanta, GA. He enjoyed winter months in his Connecticut studio and summertime in Truro and Provincetown, Cape Cod. Mr. Sovek leaves his wife, Peggy; daughter and son-in-law, Jeannie and John Cornett; son and daughter-in-law, Charles “Chip” and Rosa Sovek; grandchildren, Holly, Ryan, Nate, Ben, Tiffany and many step-children and step grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 23rd at 3:00 PM at Rowayton Arts Center, Rowayton, CT and will include an exhibition of his paintings. Another memorial is planned for Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 4:00 PM at the Provincetown Art Association in Provincetown, MA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the NPR station of your choice or Doctors without Borders.
