Obituary of Francine Buchanan
Francine Elizabeth Buchanan, 82 of Darien CT died Wednesday, October 16th peacefully in her home. Francine was born in Ticonderoga NY on December 14th 1930, the daughter of the late Donald Francis and Mary (Ferris) LaPointe. Francine graduated from Connecticut College with a BA in English and soon after married the late Warren D. Buchanan. Prior to moving to Darien they lived in Washington D.C. where Francine worked for the N.S.A.
An active member of the Darien community for 50+ years, Francine was Owner and Director of Shepherd Personnel Placement Services, Placement Coordinator for both The Darien Convalescent Center and The Catherine Gibbs School in Norwalk, as well as the Children's Education Director at St Paul's Church Darien. Her community service included the founding of "CanDo", an environmental action group focused on cleaning and protecting the rivers and streams in Darien, being a longstanding member of the DAR, serving multiple-terms on the Darien Housing Authority Commission, and being a founding member of St Paul's Church, Darien and later, an active member of Church of the Apostles, Fairfield. Francine was a proud and active thirty-year Friend of Bill.
A loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Francine is survived by her four children: Jeanne E Buchanan, Mary R (Buchanan) Schneider, Donald B Buchanan & his wife, Patricia, and Jeffrey F Buchanan & his wife, Jan; by her 6 grandchildren: Douglas Schneider, Rachel Schneider, Mary Elizabeth Buchanan, Kathryn Buchanan, Emily Buchanan, and Lindsay Buchanan; her brother, Mortimer LaPointe and her sister, Elizabeth (LaPointe) Hand. She is predeceased by her parents, her sister, Mary LaPointe and her grandson, Kyle Schneider.
Calling hours will be held 4-7pm Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Boston Post Road, Darien. A Celebration of her life will take place 2pm Thursday, October 24, 2013 at St Paul's Church, 471 Mansfield Avenue, Darien. A private family interment will be held at Valley View Cemetery in Ticonderoga, NY at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Francine's name to the Alzheimer's Research Association (http://www.alz.org/join_the_cause_donate.asp).
