Obituary of Sadie Colligan Sammis
Sadie Colligan Sammis, a resident of Darien since 1962, passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at home in Darien, surrounded by her family. She was 86. Born in 1920 in Cuba, Sadie was the daughter of the late Juan Alberto and Mabel (Sharpe) Fereira. She and her first husband Richard Vincent Colligan, a mining executive, lived in Cuba with their family until 1961.
Sadie was an accomplished gardener and was a member of the Darien Garden Club and the Garden Club of America. Her gardens and dried flower arrangements were an inspiration to all. Sadie and her family were members of Wee Burn Country Club where she enjoyed many hours of bridge.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ann Colligan-Levine of Millburn, NJ and Maria Teresa Taylor of Easton, CT; one son, Richard Vincent Colligan, Jr. of Norwalk and six grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother John Albert Fereira, Jr. of Miami, FL and a sister, Lillian McNamara of New Orleans, LA. She was predeceased by her first husband, Richard V. Colligan and her second husband, Frederick R. Sammis, former First Selectman of Darien.
A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas More R.C. Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at 10:30 AM. A private interment was held at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
