Obituary of Robert G. Ferguson, Jr.
Robert G. Ferguson, Jr., a longtime Darien resident, died January 20 at the Stamford Hospital.
He was born in Maplewood, New Jersey in 1932 to the late Robert G. Ferguson, Sr. and Madeleine Campbell Ferguson. He grew up in Baltimore, MD; Brownsville, TX; and on Long Island; where he graduated from Manhassett High School. He attended Williams College, from which he graduated in 1953. After college, he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, stationed aboard the battleship USS Iowa.
After the Navy, Mr. Ferguson began a long career with IBM in 1957. He started as a Sales Representative in New York City, and went on to hold numerous sales and marketing positions including Sales Manager, Product Manager, Senior Marketing Manager and Litigation Business Advisor. He retired from IBM in 1996. After retirement, he spent several years as a realtor in Darien, CT.
Mr. Ferguson lived with his family in Port Washington, NY from 1957 until moving to Darien in 1970. He spent the rest of his life living in Darien. He was a long-time member of Wee Burn Country Club, having served on its Board of Directors and as Chairman of its Membership Committee. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Darien YMCA. Mr. Ferguson was a life-long golfer and avid New York Giants fan. He was always optimistic about life…except when watching the Giants. In years past, Mr. Ferguson also enjoyed sailing and competed in the 1960 US Olympic Sailing Trials in Florida.
Mr. Ferguson was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Ursula Plepp Ferguson.
He is survived by his daughter Kathy Ferguson and her husband Tom Healey of Wilton, CT; his son Robert and his wife Shauna of Contoocook NH; five grandchildren, Grace Healey, Emily Healey, Tess Ferguson, Claire Healey, and Robert Ferguson. He is also survived by his sister Sally Baldwin of Ponte Vedra Beach FL.
A memorial service will be held at Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Post Road, Darien, CT on Saturday, February 12 at 11 am. Following the service, a reception will be held at Wee Burn Country Club.
