Obituary of Thomas E. Byrne, Jr.
Thomas E. Byrne Jr died peacefully at home in New Canaan, CT , February 17 at the age of ninety after a life filled with loving family, good friends, and great adventures. From his birth in Brooklyn, NY in 1926 to Saint Peter's College in New Jersey he was educated and influenced by family, priests, the US Navy and all those he encountered. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) provided a challenging career in the audit field encompassing stints in New Jersey, twenty three years in Rochester, NY and finally in the National Office in New York City. He retired from PwC in 1987.
Tom was a man who recognized the many blessing bestowed upon him during his life. He married Margaret (Peggy) in 1956, who shared his interest in religious/community involvement and raising their family. They shared adventures around the globe: in the early years with their children it was cabins, camping, lakes and the shore; in later years they travelled with friends, played lots of golf and experienced many new places. Enjoying the bounty earned and bestowed, he knew how to have a good time.
Tom believed in sharing with others less fortunate in this world. From a young age until his passing he was an active member in the Church, exploring the teachings of Christ through reading and self-study and earning a Master's Degree in Theological Studies from St Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers. His distillation of this study was important in the way he chose to live his life and his message to others: God's love is with you.
Tom was grateful for his family: wife of 60 years, Peggy; children: Tom ( Arden), Ted, John & Maureen; grandchildren Ella, Liam, Brigit, Corinne, and Patrick, his many nieces, nephews and their families. He enjoyed all the friends that shared adventures sailing, travelling, playing golf, preparing community dinners, challenging his ideas, participating in church/community groups and sharing laughs. In quiet moments he would often laugh recalling the "pieces of work" he encountered. He had many stories to tell.
His wish for all he knew was simple: Peace. Because God's love is with us, our souls can be at peace. The challenge is to recognize and embrace that fact. He was predeceased by parents: Thomas E. and Grace D. Byrne, sisters Lois Verschoor, Grace (Ray) Bomberger, brother Gerry (Lois) Byrne, niece Kathleen Verschoor and nephew Michael Byrne. In his last days, he spoke of being reunited with those souls again.
Graveside services will take place at noon February 25, 2017 at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan, CT. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Society of the Holy Child, 1341 Montgomery Ave, Rosemont, PA 19010 or Thomas More Center, 27781 Leef Rd, Webster, WI 54893.
