Obituary of Phyllis Jane Cooper Meyer

Phyllis was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on June 30, 1919 and died in Tampa, Florida on March 1, 2017. She grew up in Kalamazoo and graduated from Western Michigan University in 1941. She moved to Tampa from Darien, Connecticut in 1973 when her husband, Herbert H. Meyer, joined the faculty of the University of South Florida. While in Darien she was active in many different organizations. She served as President of the Holmes School Parents Group and the Darien Council of School Parents. She was also very active for years in the Darien Community Association holding many different offices and serving as president from 1965 to 1967. She participated on the Advisory Committee on Planning for the Future of Darien in the late 1960s and early 1970s and was a member of RTM and the League of Women Voters. She and her husband were among the founding members of Darien Country Club and belonged to the Noroton Presbyterian Church. Her service continued once in Tampa. Her activities included participation in the Lutz, Land O' Lakes Women's Club, the Forest Hills Garden Circle, the Original New Tampa Grads, and the Women's Club of the University of South Florida where she served as president from 1976 to 1977. From 1992 to 1994 she served on the Customer Advisory Council of the United States Postal Service. Phyllis loved to play bridge and was a member of a large number of different bridge groups which resulted in many wonderful friendships, both in Darien and Tampa. Other interests included crafts, especially needlepoint and knitting, and reading. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, and is survived her brother, Carl Cooper of Novi, Michigan, her daughters, Marilyn Dolcetti (Daniel) of Darien Connecticut and Janet Hall (Robert) of Temple Terrace, Florida, six grandsons and eight great grandchildren. Phyllis was buried next to her husband in a private graveside service at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
