Obituary of Harvie E. Schwartz Jr.

Harvie E. Schwartz, Jr., formerly of Dairen, CT, died on Thursday, February 24, 2011 in Stamford. He was 87.
Mr. Schwartz was born in New Rochelle, NY on November 1, 1923 to Harvie E. Schwartz and Edith Harmon. After graduating high school, Mr. Schwartz served in the U.S. Army. He then went on to receive his Regent's degree in engineering from Rennselaer College.
Mr. Schwartz's perseverance in engineering led him to a long time position at CBS Television as a chief technical engineer. In 1988, he was given a Life Time Member award to the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers). The purpose of the Society pursues to carry on and advance the engineering and technical aspects of the motion picture, television and allied arts and sciences; to gather, receive, prepare and disseminate scientific information to the above categories.
In addition, Mr. Schwartz is recognized through the Smithsonian Institute for assisting in the first "long playing" record as well as the primitive version of the first camera to take pictures of the moon. He was also instrumental in working on the colorization of the legendry file "The Wizard of Oz".
After his employment with CBS Television, he worked as an engineer for Goldmark Communications and was a Professor of Radio and Television at Brooklyn College. Upon retirement, he was a volunteer driver for the Senior Citizen Gallivant Bus service in Darien, CT. Some of his hobbies included being an avid ham radio operator, automobile mechanics and boating. In 2009, he was given an award by Susan Bysiewiez, Secretary of State, in recognition of his exemplary service and courage during the Second World War.
Mr. Schwartz is survived by two step-daughters, Joan Frate of Darien, CT and Barbara Cialone of Danbury, CT; four step grandchildren, Lori DiZeo; Eric Frate; and Michael and Robert Miner; and six step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his son, William Schwartz of Palm Coast, FL; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren, all residing in Florida.
Mr. Schwartz was married to Roslyn Holtzman, his loving wife for 36 years, who preceded him in 1989. He was also predeceased by one daughter, Deborah Schwartz.
Services are private. The Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, Darien handled the arrangements.
