Obituary of Dr. Herman R. Schoenwald

Dr. Herman R. Schoenwald of Rowayton (twenty six years and formerly of Darien), passed away peacefully at home on August 10, 2014. He was born on February 5, 1932 to the late Herman and Minnie Schoenwald in Binghamton, NY. He attended Greenwich High School and Fordham University, and then received his medical degree from Georgetown University in 1958. Dr. Schoenwald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan Schoenwald, their four children, Catherine, Carl, Christine and Clare, their seven grandchildren, Megan, Caroline, Victoria, Jordi, Emily, Emerson and Christopher, and their great-grandson, Samuel. Dr. Schoenwald was a captain in the United States Air Force, where he served as a physician at Sembach Air Base in Germany. He then went into the family practice of medicine in Darien, CT and later specialized in adolescent and adult psychiatry, completing his residency at Yale University in 1970. In addition to his lengthy private practice of psychiatry in Darien (1972 2007), Dr. Schoenwald held positions as Chief of Psychiatry at St. Joseph's Hospital (1987-1999); as attending physician, medical student/resident teacher, and Medical Board Member at Stamford Hospital; and as consultant and Medical Board Member at Courtland Gardens Health Center. In his leisure time, Dr. Schoenwald was an avid fisherman and supporter of the Long Island Sound. For over a decade, he and his family were members of the Middlesex Club and the Darien Boat Club. "Doc," as he is known at Norwalk's Ischoda Yacht Club, rose in the ranks, culminating with terms as Vice Commodore and Commodore and served on Ischoda's Board of Governors. In his retirement, Doc volunteered at the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium, the Norwalk Oyster Festival, and the Tully Health Center. The family will receive friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road on Friday, August 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 16, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Church located at 1986 Post Road, Darien . Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery in Norwalk.
