Obituary of Henry Egan

Henry Egan, who guided the Darien High School football team as quarterback to its first Fairfield County football championship in 1945, initiating a history of pigskin prowess by Blue Wave athletes. Mr. Egan had also been a mainstay of the school's baseball, basketball, cross country and track teams setting record times in several track events which stood for some time. He died Saturday in the Connecticut Hospice at Branford. He was 86. While sports was a consuming passion for the Darien native who lived for the past five decades in Easton, he also excelled as a salesman in the retail clothing industry. Owning his own clothing and ski shop store, Egan Sport, in Goodwives Shopping Center for more than a decade. In 1962 he co-founded the Inter city touch football league along with fellow founders Frank Fay, Tony Good, and Roy Macowski. A highlight of that period was the Sunday in 1988 when a CBS-TV camera crew showed up for the ITFL championship game with Andy Rooney as commentator and the footage later aired on "Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt." Coach of the Darien Sportsmen during 35 years in the Inter-City Touch Football League where his team won eight league titles in competition with the finest former high school, college and professional athletes. Mr. Egan took great satisfaction from his ITFL association and the two generations of athletes with whom he coached and competed. Mr. Egan and his wife, Georgia, were in their 60th year of marriage. He was the son of the late Harry and Mary Egan and the older brother of Mary Jo Mullen and Marjorie Reilly. He leaves a son, Henry Egan III, and his wife, Jeanne, with their son, Henry Egan IV. A daughter, Barbara and her husband, Robert, and their son, Brogan and daughter Mallory. A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday August 25, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. John RC Church, 1986 Post Rd., Darien CT 06820.
