Obituary of Phillips G. Terhune, Jr.

Phillips G. Terhune, Jr. a resident of Norwalk, CT and a former long time resident of Darien, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Norwalk Hospital. Born in Boston, MA on August 25, 1933, he was the son of the late Phillips G. Terhune and Frances Matthews Spelman. He was 78. Phillips graduated from Middlebury College in 1956. He served with the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. He was then employed in the Advertising and Marketing Department of Procter and Gamble. He returned to the New York area where he was employed by a number of advertising agencies before becoming a marketing consultant. He was publisher of the Dining Out Magazine and subsequently became a Connecticut State Marshal until the time of his death. Phillips served on the Board of Directors for the Middlesex Club; was a Darien Junior Football League Coach and on the Board of Directors for five years; served on the Fairfield County Swim League Diving Committee Chairman; and was a Darien Little League Coach. He also served on the New York Committee for the U.S. Olympic Ski Team. He was Co-founder of the Middlebury College Alumni Club of Fairfield County and a member of the Middlebury College Alumni Council. Phillips was a member and publicity advisor for the National Ski Patrol System; a member of the Darien R.T.M. for 12 years; a member of the Darien Republican Town Committee; one of the co-founders and president of the Darien Republican Club; a member of the Republican State Central Committee and served on the Public Relations Committee; and a member of the Darien Monuments and Ceremonies Committee. He is survived by his wife Carol Van Duyn Terhune of Norwalk; a daughter, Elizabeth Terhune Fuller of Stamford; a son, James Sullivan Terhune and his wife, Marnie, of Waterville, ME and four grandchildren, Jessica Thomas, Kevin Fuller and John and Henry Terhune. He is also survived by his step-father, H. Noyes Spelman of Westport, CT and two sisters, Anne M. Spelman of Fairfield, CT and Katherine Spelman Burroughs of Pittsburgh, PA. A Memorial Service will be held at the Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Post Road, Darien on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
