Obituary of Donald L Fernow

Long-time Darien resident Donald Lloyd Fernow passed away of natural causes on December 6, aged 94. Born November 27, 1924 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to John and Maude Fernow, he was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Barbara Fernow, and survived by his son, Andrew Fernow of Toronto, Ontario and daughter, Laura Fernow, of Darien, CT. Donald grew up in Chicago, Illinois and served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he saw combat in France (1944) and was later appointed to the Military Police (MP) guarding General George Pattons headquarters in Germany at the end of the war (1945). After returning home, Donald pursued his education by attending the University of Chicago and University of Southern California where he received degrees in geology, business and film studies. From there, he pursued work in the financial services industry that encompassed a successful 25-year career on Wall Street as an investment analyst covering energy. He will be fondly remembered as a loving father and devoted husband. Greatly admired for his strong work ethic and keen intellect, Donald was an avid reader of non-fiction with an almost encyclopedic knowledge of history, particularly Western civilizations, along with being a movie buff. Travel was his passion as he visited over 150 countries in his lifetime, which included African safaris, jungle treks in the Amazon and a cruise to Antarctica. Donald first settled in Darien in 1967 and continued to live in the community for more than 50 years long after his retirement. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien.
