Obituary of Viola P. Nelson

Viola P. Nelson passed away peacefully on January 19, 2018. Vi was born in Stamford on April 29, 1926 to Catherine (Seminara) and Anthony Parente. She lived most of her life in Stamford. Vi graduated from Stamford High School in 1943, was an active member of the reunion committee, and attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She worked at Petro Oil for a brief time, but left to dedicate her life to her family. Vi and John were married on October 11, 1947. Vi was a loving mother and grandmother who encouraged each of her children and grandchildren to pursue their dreams. She was known for her excellent Italian cooking and began several family traditions including trays of home-made manicotti at Christmas and Angel Wings at Easter. Vis passion was golf. She played in the Womens 18-Holers at Hubbard Heights and Sterling Golf Courses. She was a member of the Stamford Womens Club, and served as Hospitality Chairman. She enjoyed playing bridge with her husband and friends as well as bowling with her husband in St. Johns Lutheran Church Bowling League.
Vi was predeceased by her husband, John, her parents, her sisters Mary and Fanny, and her daughter, Darlene. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Mortensen (Paul) of Durham, CT and Nancy (Dick) Albu of Darien, CT and her son Rick (Lou Anne) of New Jersey. She also leaves her grandchildren Paul Mortenson, Jr. (Dena) of Woodbridge, CT, Kristine Mortensen of Manhattan, Julia (Tom) Williams of Brooklyn, Marc Albu (fianc Annie Starke) of Studio City, CA, Trey and Ryan Nelson of New Jersey. She has three great-grandchildren, Paul Mortensen III, Alexandra Mortensen, and Asher Williams. Vi is also survived by her aunt, Yolanda Seminara, of Stamford, CT and her cousin, Rev. Jonathan Woodhall of Raleigh, NC.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Atria of Darien, Sunrise Senior Living and Smith House, along with her independent aide, for their outstanding care and compassion. They treated all of us like family and made Mom feel comfortable and loved.
Calling hours will be Friday, January 26 at Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Boston Post Rd., Darien from 9:30-10:30, followed by a Mass at Sacred Heart Church , 37 Schuyler Ave. in Stamford at 11:00. Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford.
