Obituary of Gerald E. Prentice

Gerald E. Prentice, a resident of Darien for 50 years, died Friday, January 14, 2005 at the Masonic Care Center in Wallingford. He died of complications associated with Alzheimer's Disease. Mr. Prentice was born on September 29, 1920 in Lisbon, ND, son of the late Floyd and Mable Prentice. After spending his early years in North Dakota and Minneapolis, he attended the University of Maryland from 1938-1942. Upon graduation he immediately joined the Army Air Force, where he served as a pilot during World War II, attaining the rank of Captain. After leaving the serice in 1946 he joined the IBM Corporation in their sales division, and had a successful 40-year career at IBM until he retired as Vice President, Administration in 1985. Mr. Prentice was an active volunteer in various Darien town functions for the past 50 years. He was an avid golfer and long-time member of the Country Club of Darien, where he served in various capacities on its Board of Directors, including President. He was also an accomplished piano player, who often delighted family and friends as he accompanied them during sing-a-longs. His other love was working in his yard, which he continued doing until the end of his life. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Barbara Boose Prentice of Wilton, CT; four daughters, Jacqueline Leach of New Canaan, CT; Carol Crist of Atlanta, GA; Sue Prentice of Simsbury, CT; and Janet Poff of Lee, NH; one son, Gerald Prentice of Glendale, AZ; eight grandchildren and one great grandson. His sister, Ruth Marjorie Schroll lives in Hutchinson, KS. A Funeral Service was held at the Noroton Presbyterian Chapel, Darien, CT on Friday, January 21, 2005. Burial was held at Spring Grove Cemeter, Darien.
