James William Flynn of North Branford, CT, a former long time resident of Darien, died on Wednesday, December 14, 2005, after a brief illness at the age of 95. Born February 5, 1910 in Flemington, WVA, he was the son of the late Mary Ann (Mamie) D. and Benjamin L. Flynn. He was raised in Logan, WVA, where he started school in the third grade. At the age of 19, he graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was a 1951 graduate of the Harvard Business School in the Advanced Management Program. After working for the Proctor and Gamble Company for three years, he joined Lever Brothers Company, an international soap and detergent manufacturer, where he retired in 1974 as General Manager of Production and Engineering. He then joined the Colin A. Houston Consulting Firm, serving as Senior Vice President until his second retirement in 1990. In 1933, Mr. Flynn married the love of his life, Virginia (Ginny) Squibb whom he met while working in Cincinnati. She predeceased him on December 24, 2002, six months prior to their 70th wedding anniversary. In 1942, Mr. Flynn was called up for active duty in the Army Air Corps, eventually becoming a Lieutenant Colonel in the European Theatre. During this time, Mr. Flynn played a significant role in the planning of the “D-Day” invasion. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. During their marriage, Mr. & Mrs. Flynn lived in Teaneck, NJ; Chicago, IL; Boston, MA and Darien CT, where they lived for 40 years until moving to Evergreen Woods, a life care community in North Branford, CT. While living in Darien, Mr. Flynn was extremely active in the community including serving as president of the Darien YMCA, a Deacon and Elder of the Noroton Presbyterian Church, and was a charter member of the Country Club of Darien. At Evergreen Woods, he served on the Finance Committee and Residents Council. Mr. Flynn is survived by his son, Michael D. of Burlington, VT. His eldest son, James W. (Bill) Flynn, Jr. predeceased him in 1994. Since Bill’s death, his widow, Kay of Boston, MA, continued to be a wonderful source of love and support for him. Mr. Flynn is also survived by his five grandchildren: Virginia (Flynn) Brzezinski of Alexandria, VA; James W. Flynn, III of Hamilton, MT; Sean M. Flynn of Seattle, WA; Kevin W. Flynn of Bethesda, MD; Ryan P. Flynn of Chicago, IL; and six great grandchildren. Interment was held at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien, CT. A Memorial Service for friends and family will be held at the Noroton Presbyterian Chapel, 2011 Post Road, Darien, CT on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Health Center at Evergreen Woods, 88 Notch Hill Road, North Branford, CT 06471.
