Obituary of Howard Warner Pierpont

Howard Warner Pierpont, a resident of Darien, CT, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at Norwalk Hospital after a short illness. Born in Omaha, NE on April 17, 1909, he was the son of the last Phoebe Cook Smith and Henry Warner Pierpont. He was 96. Mr. Pierpont graduated form Deerfield Academy, class of 1928 and Dartmouth College, class of 1932. Howard retired in 1972 as vice president of The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States now AXA. Equitable was a pioneer in Group Life and Health Benefits for employees and Howard spend his entire career in this area of the company. Howard viewed life’s happenings wryly, positively and with fun and humor. He enjoyed life long relationships with Deerfield and Dartmouth as well as classmates from both schools and Equitable associates. He had a great love for our country and enjoyed his travels around it both for business and pleasure. His travels also included areas outside our shores. Howard moved to Darien in 1956 from Chicago. He and his family enjoyed boating on Long Island Sound and also riding at the Ox Ridge Hunt Club where he served on the Board and was treasurer for a number of years. After retirement, he continued to ride for a while but mostly enjoyed his family, travel and working on the grounds of his home. Howard is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Dorothy Galvin Pierpont of Darien; a son, John Pierpont also of Darien; two daughters, Beth Schober of New Preston, CT and Barbara Tabory of Ridgefield, CT. He is also survived by a grandson, Torrence Fossland; a great grandson, Maximillian Warner Fossland both of New Preston and two nieces, two great nephews and two great nieces. He was predeceased by his first wife of 33 years, Dorothy Wilson and a brother Henry Pierpont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John R.C. Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien, CT on Monday, February 27, 2006 at 11:30 AM. Interment will be private.
