Obituary of John J. Abberley

John J. Abberley, a resident of New Canaan, CT and a former resident of Darien, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, CT. Born December 16, 1916 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Lester Stokes and Mary (Lyons) Abberley. He was 89. Mr. Abberley graduated from Poly Prep School in Brooklyn, NY; Williams College and the University of Virginia Law School. He was a partner of the law firm of Abberley, Kooiman, Marcellino and Clay in New York City. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy as Lt. Commander and was captain of a convoy frigate on D-Day Normandy invasion. In 1955 to 1956, he served as Special Assistant to the Director of the Marshall Plan, Paris, France. At various times, he was a trustee of Poly Prep School and Suffield Academy, Suffield, CT. He was president of the Clinton Hall Association, secretary-treasurer International Law Association, member of American Bar Association and Bar Association of the City of New York. An avid sailor, he was a member of the Cruising Club of America, New York Yacht Club, Noroton Yacht Club and various other sailing associations and clubs. He is survived by his wife, Joni of New Canaan; three children, Lester S. Abberley of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Georgine A. Carter of Mendocito, CA and Frederick C. Abberley of Norwalk, CT and six grandchildren. He is also survived by three step-children Walter Fair of Wilton, CT; Donald Curran of Cos Cob, CT and Alexandra Jennison of New York City and six step-grandchildren. Interment will be private at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.
