Obituary of Anne B. Herrgen

Anne B. Herrgen, a former principal of Westover School in Stamford, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2006 at Stamford Hospital. Born July 26, 1915 in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Stelmach) Ciejka. She lived in Darien for 34 years before returning to Stamford in 2000. She was 90. Mrs. Herrgen graduated from Stamford High School in 1934. She complete her bachelor’s degree at New Britain Teacher’s College (currently Central Connecticut State University) in 1938 and received her graduate degrees from Columbia teacher’s College in New York. Anne retired from the Stamford Public Schools in 1975. She began teaching at Stark and Glenbrook schools. She became the first assistant principal at Westover School and was later appointed as it principal until her retirement. Anne was a Eucharistic Minister at St. John R.C. Church in Darien, as well as a long time active member. She was a member of the Darien Senior Center, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Catholic Daughters of Americas Court St. Mary #85, the Southern Fairfield County Retired Teachers Association and AARP. She is survived by two sisters, Frances Nedderman of Bethel, CT and Bernice Blessman of Green Valley, AZ. She is also survived locally by her nieces Sandra Fox of Stamford and Nancy Czupkowski of Monroe, CT as well as many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews residing across the country. She is predeceased by her husband Robert Herrgen in 1987, two brothers, George and Joseph Ciejka, and four sisters, Catherine Reese, Mary Jerabek, Victoria Femine and Julianne Weiner. Anne will be fondly remembered for her devotion to her family and love of keeping in touch through her numerous cards and letters to her relatives and friends throughout the country. Professionally, she was admired by her colleagues, students and their parents, and earned everyone’s respect through her strict yet caring approach. She is still remembered today by former students of her school. Friends may call at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, CT on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John R.C. Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. John R.C. Cemetery in Darien. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, 279 New Britain Road, Kensington, CT 06037.
