David Rudd Arnold, of Darien, Connecticut, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at the age of 89. He was born on June 26, 1916 in Galesburg, Illinois to Ray Mortimer Arnold and Helen Rudd Arnold.

David was a graduate of Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, in 1937 and was a Phi Beta Kappa. He attended the Harvard Business School and graduated in 1939 with an MBA, and was a Certified Public Accountant. In 1980, he retired from the Continental Can Corporation, where he was a Senior Vice President of the Financial Group.

He was extremely active as a long standing Trustee at Knox College in Galesburg, IL, that was founded by his family in 1837. He served as a Director of the Mission Society in New York City, and for the Bank of Virginia, as well as several small start-up companies. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp.

As an active tennis player, David was a member of the Wee Burn Country Club and was well known on the court with the Senior Men’s League. He was also a member of the Union League Club, the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and a member of the First Congregational Church in Darien. He was a dedicated gardener, avid reader, world traveler, loving husband and father, and great friend.

David is survived by his wife Joan of 36 years and three children: Professor Steven Arnold of State College, PA, Nancy Arnold Wilson of Dallas, TX, Judith Arnold Conner of Winnetka, IL, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is survived by step-children: Nina Preyre of Madrid, Spain, and Reverend Rene Carrillo of Penn Yan, NY., and five step-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Judge Hugh Hudson Arnold of Greeley, CO.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 15, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Darien, 14 Brookside Road.
