Obituary of Barbara Shuttleworth Hamilton

Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Barbara Shuttleworth Hamilton, 88, formerly of Darien, died Monday, October 29, 2012 at her home at Meadow Ridge in Redding, CT. Barbara was born in Honolulu to Henry Sewell and Harriet Richardson Turner. Her parents lost their son, Barbara's younger brother Hunter, when he was just five years old making Barbara an only child and the love of their lives. She attended Punahou School and graduated from Dominican College near San Francisco. After December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day, she could not go home for seven months until after her graduation. Shortly after returning to Hawaii, she worked with the Women's Air Raid Defense (WARD) as a plane spotter during WW II on Oahu. Barbara attended the Parson School of Design and studied fashion design in New York. It was there she met her first husband, Harry B. Shuttleworth, and they were married in 1950. They first lived in Scarsdale and moved to Darien in 1955 where they raised their three children. Barbara was very involved with St. Luke's Episcopal Church where she was a devoted volunteer teacher and a longtime member of the Altar Guild. Her love of flower arranging led her to the Darien Garden Club where she won the Fenwick Medal in the late 70's. Soon afterwards, she became a flower show judge and enjoyed helping newcomers to beautiful design. Prior to moving to Meadow Ridge five years ago, she was a resident of New Canaan where Harry B. Shuttleworth died in 1992. There she spent time with her children, her friends and judging flower shows until she met and married John Hamilton 12 years ago. The two of them enjoyed travelling, their friends and family, and most of all, they enjoyed each other. Barbara was pre-deceased by her daughter, Anne Shuttleworth, in 2009. Barbara is survived by her husband John R. Hamilton; sons John (Michelle) of Salt Lake City, UT and Rick (Vicky) of Huntington Beach, CA; grandchildren Emily (Kurt), Jane, Katy, and Mike Shuttleworth; John's children Heather Hamilton (Dr. Edd Lyon), Ross Hamilton (Cynthia Babbler), Hillary Hamilton (daughters Anyata and Isabel), and Rob Hamilton; brother-in-law William Shuttleworth (Hennie) and their three children Sharon Shuttleworth, Susan Leggett (Bob) and Steve Shuttleworth. Memorial Service will be led by The Reverend David Anderson at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1864 Post Rd., Darien, Sat, Nov. 10 at 2 PM. Columbarium arrangements are being handled by Edward Lawrence Funeral Home. Though she loved flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society, 38 Richards Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06854 or the American Red Cross, 39 Leroy Avenue, Darien, CT 06820 would be a blessing. Funeral Home: Edward Lawrence Funeral Home 2119 Post Road Darien, CT USA 06820
