Obituary of William Roberts Swett

William Roberts Swett, a resident of Rowayton and a long-time Darien resident, died on September 18, 2009 at Norwalk Hospital after a short illness. He was 95 years old.
Mr. Swett was born in Montrose, CO in 1914. He was the son of Everett Harold Swett and Ruth Wittle Swett. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1936, was a First Lieutenant in the Army Reserve and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was mustered out as a major.
In his professional career, Mr. Swett worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, was the controller of Bruce Payne and Associates and worked for IBM Corporation as the Director of Manufacturing, retiring in 1975. After retiring, he started his own consulting firm, William Swett and Associates which he closed in 1999. Mr. Swett served on several boards of directors including Carnrick Laboratories, Inc.
Mr. Swett was an active member of the Darien community serving as Police Commissioner, Representative Town Meeting member and Chairman of the Town of Darien Charter Revision Commission. In the sailing community Mr. Swett was a Corinthian, Commander of the Darien Sail and Power Squadron and a competitive sailor.
Until the time of his death, Mr. Swett was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and Senior Men's Club. He was a long time member of the First Congregational Church of Darien.
"He was a kind and loving man who had a wonderful sense of humor and great integrity. He cared about his family and his community. He will be greatly missed by the family he loved and who really loved him."
Mr. Swett is survived by his life partner of nine years, Nina Pallesen Richardson of Rowyton; his daughter Leslie Swett Ellis and her husband Howard of Croton-on-Hudson, NY; granddaughters Alicia and Emily and his nephews, Richard, Jay and Bill Swett and their children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wives Marion Grinnell Swett and Marcia Malloy Swett and his brother Bo Swett.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the First Congregational Church, 14 Brookside Road, Darien, CT. A private family interment will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien.
