Obituary of Herbert H. Meyer

Dr. Herbert H. Meyer, a resident of Darien, CT from 1950 to 1973, father of Marilyn Dolcetti of Darien, an industrial psychologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of South Florida, died of a heart attack in University Community Hospital in Tampa, FL on Saturday, October 28, 2006. He was 89 years old. Dr. Meyer came to the University of South Florida in 1973 to organize and direct a new Ph.D. program in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Over the ensuing years that program gained an international reputation, with graduates serving in academic, industrial and governmental organizations throughout the United States and in a number of foreign countries. Before coming to the University of South Florida, Dr. Meyer directed a personnel research program on the corporate staff of the General Electric Company for over 20 years. Dr. Meyer was internationally prominent in his field. He authored over 60 publications in professional books and journals and was a frequent speaker at professional meetings and before various management groups world-wide. He also provided consulting services to many governmental and business organizations. He served as President of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology in 1970-71 and was granted their prestigious Professional Practice Award in 1988. He was born on October 16, 1917 in Fort Wayne, IN. He attended Indiana University, then Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where he received the bachelors degree in 1941. He served as a Naval Aviator in World War II. The G. I. Bill enabled him to return to school after the war. He earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan in 1949. Dr. Meyer served as President of the Darien YMCA Board of Governors in its formative years, as Chairman of the United Way fund drive in Darien in the 1950’s, and several terms in the R.T.M. in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He is survived by his wife of over 64 years, the former Phyllis J. Cooper. Mrs. Meyer was also very active in community affairs in Darien, serving as President of the Council of School Parents in the 1950’s and as President of the Darien Community Association in the 1960’s. Dr. Meyer is also survived by two daughters, Marilyn Dolcetti of Darien and Janet Hall of Temple Terrace, FL; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, November 13, 2006 at 11:30 AM at Spring Grove Cemetery, Hecker Avenue, Darien. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Herb Meyer Endowed Fellowship in I/O Psychology Fund #426640 sent to the U.S.S.
