John G. Fitzsimmons, a long time resident of Darien, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2006 at the Darien Health Care Center. Born February 23, 1925 in Manhattan, New York City, he was the son of the late John Stanley Fitzsimmons, M.D. and Marie Grave Fitzsimmons. He was 81. John grew up in Darien and attended the King School in Stamford where he excelled in football and tennis, winning the New England Schoolboy Tennis Championship in his senior year. Upon graduation in 1943, John set aside a scholarship to Yale University and joined the United States Army. He participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, France, landing on Omaha Beach, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge under General George S. Patton. He was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in World War II. John worked for Data Switch as a foreman. He was also a member of the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Squire and the American Legion Post 0012. He enjoyed playing tennis until his later years and was an avid fisherman and gardener. John was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Marie Mazzeo Fitzsimmons. He is survived by two sons, John G. Fitzsimmons II of Seekonk, MA and Michael P. Fitzsimmons of Colombia, CT; and two daughters, Patricia F. Cooke of Darien, CT and Judith A. Fitzsimmons of Franklin, TN; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The family received friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home on Friday, November 10, 2006. A Prayer Service will be held at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 2:00 PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Darien Little League, Marie Mazzeo Fitzsimmons Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 2108, Darien, CT 06820.
