Obituary of Leigh Owen McGehee

Leigh Owen McGehee of Darien, CT died January 1, 2007 at age 77. Born July 1, 1929 in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Mr. McGehee was the son of Francis Nye and Ruth McGehee. He was a graduate of Admiral Billard Academy in New London, CT.
In life, Mr. McGehee worked in the international security printing business. He was Senior Vice President of the American Bank Note Company and later President of the International Division of the United States Bank Note Company, both in New York City. During his career, which spanned over 40 years, Mr. McGehee conducted business in over 35 countries. He was a Director of the National Trade Council of the United States and a member of the Venezuelan American Association, Mexican American Association, Ecuadorian American Association, and the Pan American Union. He also served the United States Government as a Latin American Currency expert.
Mr. McGehee also served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1954. He was a Non -Commissioned Officer and a Heavy Weapons Commander in the 508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division. During his military service, Staff Sergeant McGehee made over 54 parachute jumps throughout the United States. Throughout his life, Mr. McGehee enjoyed boating in Long Island Sound and extensive international travel. In retirement, Mr. McGehee lived both in Darien, CT and Savannah, GA where he worked as volunteer for the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum in Savannah.
Mr. McGehee is survived by his beloved companion Mary Gwyn Schrieber of Darien, CT, his former wife Elizabeth Anne McGehee of Norwalk, CT, and his four children and their spouses: Mark and Sabrina McGehee of Wilton, CT, Leslie and Robert Woods of Gales Ferry, CT, Susan and Walter Brickowski of Manasquan, NJ, and Robert and Nina McGehee of Bethlehem, PA. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Buck of Westport, CT and his eight grandchildren.
Calling hours are from 5pm – 8pm on Friday, Jan. 5 at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien CT. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 6 at 11am at St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Darien. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Lung Association of CT, 45 Ash Street, East Hartford CT, 06108-3272
