Obituary of Helen L. Rodgers

Helen L. Rodgers, a 45-year resident of Darien, passed away quietly at home on Thursday, March 14, 2013. She was 83 years old. Born inCleveland Ohio on June 22, 1929, Helen was the daughter of the late Dr. William and Nellie Loucks and the sister of Laurie and Robert Loucks, both deceased. Helen grew up in Cleveland and summered at the Loucks farmhouse in Mountain, Ontario, Canada. Helen attended Miami University (Ohio) where she met her husband of 62 years, Francis G. "Buck" Rodgers. Besides Buck, Helen is survived by her daughter Christy Smith of Colorado; her son Scott Rodgers and his wife Linda Browne Rodgers of Indiana; her daughter Kathy Heckert and her husband Alex Heckert of Connecticut; and seven grandchildren, Kellyann Smith Marlow of Colorado, Casey Smith of New York, Ryan Smith Colorado, Lindsey Rodgers of Illinois, Michael Rodgers of Indiana, and Matthew and Scott Heckert, both of Connecticut. Helen enjoyed her life as a housewife and mother, raising the three children and supporting Buck throughout his career with IBM and his post career pursuits. They lived in Ohio, New York, and California before moving to Darien in 1968. For the last 30 years Helen and Buck also wintered in Johns Island (Vero Beach) Florida. They traveled the world and enjoyed many special events, yet home and family were always of utmost importance. Helen was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, volunteer with the Junior League in Pasadena and Fairfield County, accomplished swimmer, golfer and lover of dogs, especially German Shepherds. She was a member of Wee Burn and Johns Island Country Clubs. Helen will be remembered most for her smile, her kind, gentle ways and her indomitable spirit. She opened her home and heart to her children's friends, always accepting, never judgmental and there when needed. She especially reveled in seeing her grandchildren grow up and begin lives of their own. Services will be held at Noroton Presbyterian Chapel, 2011 Post Road, Darien on Wednesday, March 20th at 2 PM. Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the Darien Police and Post 53 for the care and respect given at the time of her passing.
