Obituary of Henry James Maitland

Henry James Maitland, a resident of Norwalk, CT, and a former 30 year resident of New Canaan, passed away on Tuesday, March, 13, 2007 at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk. Born in 1920 in Paris, France, he was the son of the late David and Rose Eugenie (Chaumeau) Maitland. He was 86.
Henry was educated at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. In 1940 James, with his family, fled France via Portugal to America. From 1943 to 1947, he served in the American Navy receiving many commendations during the WW II battles in the Pacific. He worked in the Auto Service Dealership for General Motors in Waterbury, CT; was the G.M. Service Representative for East Africa and also worked for American Motors and Volvo.
He was a member of Clan Maitland of North America, the St. Andrews Society in Connecticut, the Exchange Club, Mystic Seaport, Theatrical Society of Waterbury and the American Legion. He was and avid skier and a member of the Nova Ski Club.
Henry is survived by his children, Helen Elizabeth Gillick of Marshville, NC; James William Maitland, II of London, England and Sarah Victoria Maitland of Miami, FL; and two grandchildren, Kaitie Ann and Kelly Devon Maitland. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Ann Maitland-Baldwin of Darien and a brother, David Maitland of New Rochelle, NY. He was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Maitland and Agnes Sherman.
Friends may call at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home 2119 Post Road Darien on Sunday, March 18, 2007 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, 178 Oenoke Ridge Road, New Canaan on Monday, March 19, 2007 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
