Obituary of Viola Matlak
Please share a memory of Viola to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Viola Matlak, 82, of Southbury died peacefully on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the Lutheran Home of Southbury. She was the widow of Carl S. Matlak, Sr. who died in February 2007.
Mrs. Matlak was born February 11, 1931 in Kentucky to Stephen and Flora (Carmack) Thompson. She and her husband made their home in Darien for fifty years, before moving to Heritage Village in Southbury in December 2000. Her passion in life was her family and she took great pleasure hosting family dinners. She enjoyed taking vacations with her family, cooking, RV camping, reading her Bible, Yankee Baseball games, singing at family get-togethers and dancing with her grandson, James.
Viola was loved and cherished by all who knew her. She will be fondly remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and friendly smile for everyone she met. She leaves her daughter, Elizabeth and son-in-law, Albert Urkawich of Southbury with whom she made her home after the passing of her husband; two sons, Joseph (Beth) Matlak of Hickory, NC and Richard (Cynthia) Matlak of Darien; eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; two brothers, Edward (Carmen) Thompson of Charlotte, NC and Charles Thompson of Richmond, WA; two sisters, Judy (Robert) Richards of Wildwood, FL and Jean (Ralph) Ridley of Springvale, ME and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Viola was predeceased by her son, Carl S. Matlak, Jr.; three brothers Raymond, Irving and Donald; and four sisters, Lillian, Gladys, Ruby and Esther.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Casey Ott and Virginia Hannon of the Western Connecticut Medical Group of Southbury; the entire staff of the Lutheran Home of Southbury Cushman I South; the Regional Hospice Care of Western Connecticut; all of whom gave their unwavering dedication to excellent, compassionate and loving care to our mother, Viola Matlak.
A memorial service and celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, CT. Interment will take place at St. John Cemetery, Darien.
