Kinglsey Newell Meyer Obituary

Kingsley Newell Meyer, 86, of Darien, CT and East Falmouth, MA and previously a long time resident of Barrington, RI, died on Friday, April 20, 2007 at Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut. Born in Boston, MA on May 1, 1920, Mr. Meyer was raised in East Greenwich, RI. He was a graduate of Providence Country Day School and Brown University, class of 1943, where he began a life-long involvement with the university, serving in undergraduate and then alumni leadership positions. Mr. Meyer also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Mr. Meyer served in the United State Navy as a Lt. Commander in the Destroyer fleet, Atlantic and Pacific theatres in World War II. He served two tours of duty.

Mr. Meyer began his professional life at Brown University as the Assistant Dean of Admissions, followed by a seven year career at the Davol Rubber Company in Providence. At Davol, he served on the Executive Management Committee and was the National Sales and Promotions Manager. However, it was advertising that became Mr. Meyer’s passion and focus for the rest of his professional life. In 1958, he joined the New England advertising firm, Horton, Church and Goff as Executive Vice President, partner and member of the Board of Directors. He was appointed President of the firm in 1976, the year that he was honored as the “Advertising Man of the Year” in Rhode Island. Mr. Meyer was a past Chairman of the American Association of Advertising Agencies, NE Council, the National Sales Executives Club and the Providence Advertising Club.

Mr. Meyer’s life was distinguished by his strong commitment to his community. Named as the youngest Eagle Scout in Rhode Island in his youth, he continued this involvement by later serving as the Director of Narragansett Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Also, Mr. Meyer was the past President of the Board of Trustees of Providence Country Day School, past Trustee of St. Andrew’s School, past Director of Junior Achievement of Rhode Island and a former Director of Associated Alumni of Brown University. Mr. Meyer was a past Commodore of the Menauhant Yacht Club and, in his retirement in Falmouth, served as the Director of the Falmouth Hospital Capital Campaign. He was a current member of the Woods Hole Golf Club and a former member of the Rhode Island Country Club. Mr. Meyer loved sports as an active participant and as a fan, particularly golf, The Patriots and the Red Sox.

He is survived by his loving family, daughters Candace Bartlett of Darien, CT; Lisa M. Tischer of Princeton, NJ; a son Kingsley N. Meyer, Jr. of Rio Grande, OH; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife Carol Jenckes Meyer preceded him in death in 2004.

A burial service will be held at Forest Chapel Cemetery in Barrington, RI on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at 11:30 AM. A memorial service will be held this summer in Menauhant, East Falmouth, MA.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Falmouth Hospital, Falmouth, MA.
