Obituary of Tine Elisabeth ten Broeke

Please share a memory of Tine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Tineke ten Broeke, a resident of Darien since 1971, passed away peacefully at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford on July 21, 2013. She was 82 years old. Tineke was born on November 11, 1930 on the island of Java in Indonesia, formerly the Dutch East Indies. Tineke and her family lived in Indonesia for sixteen years as her father was an executive for a large Dutch agricultural conglomerate. She and her sister attended boarding school and were living in Sumatra when the Japanese Army invaded Indonesia in 1942. Tineke, her sister and parents, along with all the Dutch nationals in Indonesia, were interned in the Japanese prison camps. They survived the ordeal, and were released at the end of World War II when Japan surrendered. Tineke met her husband of 58 years in boarding school in Indonesia, they were classmates at age seven, in 1937. They re-connected in The Netherlands as University students, where Tineke received her degree from the University of Amsterdam, and in 1955 Tineke married Klaas E. ten Broeke. Tineke and Klaas emigrated to the United States in 1957 and eventually became United States citizens. They lived in Palos Verdes Estates, California until 1971 when they moved to Darien. For the past 15 years they have divided their time between Darien and Vero Beach, Florida. During their 58-year marriage, Tineke and Klaas traveled extensively throughout the world. Tineke was an active member of the Darien community, as president of the Darien Newcomers Club, the DCA Garden Club and the Darien YWCA. She also enjoyed coaching the Darien High School Girls JV Tennis Team. As a long time member of the Tokeneke Club, Tineke is much loved by her friends young and old. Her smiling face and effervescent personality will be missed by all who knew her, and she will be remembered for her positive attitude and love of life. In addition to her husband, Tineke is survived by her two daughters Trudie Larrabee and Laura Rumbough who live in Darien and Middlebury, VT respectively with their husbands Ben Larrabee and Doug Rumbough, and grandchildren Kate and Teddy Larrabee, and Peter and Anna Rumbough. Tineke's sister Ankie ter Haar, niece and nephew Dorien deBuck and Marc ter Haar live in The Netherlands. A private ceremony for the family is being planned.
