Obituary of Thomas J. O'Brien

Thomas J. O’Brien, a longtime resident of Stamford, CT, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2007 at Stamford Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on August 4, 1920 in Darien, CT and was the son of the late Edward J. and Mary (Dooley) O’Brien.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Magdalen (Koropsak) O’Brien; one son, Thomas J. O’Brien, Jr. and his wife, Kerrin of Puyallup, WA; one daughter, Holly Mickelson and her husband, Michael of Stamford; and two granddaughters, Hannah and Katie Mickelson. He was predeceased by one brother, Edward S. O’Brien of Stamford, CT.
Mr. O’Brien graduated from Darien High School in 1938 where he was a standout athlete. After high school, he signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox and was assigned to the Bristol Twins in the Appalachian League where he played for two years. He was honored by the Darien Old Timer’s Athletic Association in 1982 for his sporting achievements.
He was a veteran of World War II serving with the 220th Armored Engineer Battalion and saw 18 months of overseas duty.
He joined the Stamford Police Department in 1953 and served 38 years as a patrolman before retiring in 1991. In 1979, he was awarded the Policeman of the Year award for his outstanding service.
The family will receive friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, CT on Wednesday, May 9, 2007 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Services and interment at Spring Grove Cemetery are private.
