Obituary of Elliot E. Howe

Elliot E. Howe, a former long time resident of North Adams, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at Long Ridge of Stamford in Stamford, CT. Born in 1915 in Wilmington, VT, he was the son of the late Walter and Ethel (Smith) Howe. He was the youngest of four children. He was 91. Elliot was a graduate of the Bentley College of Accounting, and pursued that profession his entire life. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II, during which he was held captive in a German P.O.W. camp for much of his time overseas. He moved to North Adams in the 1940’s, where he lived on East Main Street until moving to Connecticut in 2003 to be closer to relatives. He and Phyllis -- his wife of 52 years, and long-time Drury High School librarian, who died in 1996 -- could be seen walking the downtown streets of North Adams on a daily basis. He worked at the Cascade Paper Company for many years before purchasing School Crafters and the Mohawk Paper Company, all of North Adams. Before his retirement in 1982, he was an accountant with Ceramaseal, a Lebanon, NY industrial ceramics maker. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and active in community affairs especially the North Adams First Methodist Church where he was treasurer. Elliot is survived by his daughter, Judith D. Yeaton of Jacksonville, FL; his son, James D. Howe of Darien, CT; five grandchildren, Berton G. Yeaton, III, Diane Davis, Aaron D. Howe, Mark E. Howe and Mary E. Howe; 10 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the First Methodist Church of North Adams, MA, followed by a graveside service at Southview Cemetery on Church Street and a reception at the Holiday Inn also in North Adams. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be to the First Methodist Church of North Adams in North Adams, MA.
