Obituary of Charles Arnold Kalman

C. A. "Joe" Kalman, a Darien resident for 48 years, died Tuesday, August 3, at Stamford Hospital. Mr. Kalman was the husband of Diana J. Kalman of Darien.
He was born August 20, 1919 in St. Paul, Minn., the son of Charles Oscar Kalman and Alexandra Robertson.
A graduate of St. Paul Academy, 1937, Mr. Kalman completed a B. S. degree in engineering and business administration at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1941.
After MIT, he worked for two large shipbuilding concerns on Navy combat vessels and, then, the American Machine and Foundry Company. In 1950, he joined Booz Allen & Hamilton, management consultants, where he had a 35-year career as senior vice-president with clients primarily in transportation, aerospace, and telecommunications. He also served on a wide range of corporate directorships.
Mr. Kalman was committed to supporting basic and medical research and served as a member of the International Council of the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA. His other activities included membership in the Aspen Institute Society of Fellows, the Wings Club, New York Yacht Club, Wee Burn Country Club and the Tokeneke Club, where he enjoyed his greatest pleasure, playing the bass in the Club's Sunday jazz session.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Kalman is survived by two children by his first wife, Marie Dickey Kalman: Charles Eric Kalman of Woodland Hills, CA. and Kristina Kalman Fares of Wilton, CT.; their spouses Cindy Kalman and Nabil Fares; and two grandchildren, Emile and Melissa Fares. Besides his immediate family, he is survived by two nephews and many nieces.

A memorial service will be held September 11 at 11 am, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1864 Post Road in Darien.
