I just want to say how sorry I am about Mr. Charles Sovek. A few year ago, I sent him an e-mail telling him how I love the way he painted nature in a simple and genius way. Today, as I wanted to go on his website, I realised that he was gone for ever. Please accept my condoleances. He was a great artist

I collaborated with Charles on his website for more than five years, and grew to think of him as a friend as much as a client. He was without exception generous with his time and talent, gracious in all things, and had a love of learning that was infectious. He was a powerful and positive influence on artists and students around the world, and he will truly be missed.

Charles Sovek has been a Teacher, Friend and very significant Mentor in my life. His incredible talent as an artist, his natural joy of life and his willingness to share so generously will always be part of the deep appreciation I have for Charles. He has coached me as a younger college student and then in my more recent adult years as a plein air painter and workshop teacher. He has demonstrated the word JOY to me in all he has done...a true blessing to myself personally and to so, so many others. My best to his dear Peggy, and his children and their families. I am very saddened to learn of Charles' passing. I had the privilege of taking a workshop with him 2 years ago on Cape Cod ,and can say unequivocally that he was a wonderful, warm, funny, individual with a great heart and a great gift for painting and imparting knowledge. He loved to teach ,as is evident from his many workshops and his website which is a treasure trove of technique for artists. His wonderfully bright and colorful paintings will live on as a legacy to a colorful individual. Two favorite memories are of him riding his bicycle around to visit all the workshop participants, and him greeting his "sweetheart" Peggy , when she came to visit as we painted in Wellfleet one day. His love for her was palpable. My deep condolences to his wife , His children and his grandchildren. He will be missed. I have used one of his quotes as my 'signature line' on the wetcanvas.com site, since I first met him. It says: "The bottom line is, painting, at its richest, is done best with no purpose whatsoever aside from pleasing the person making the art.".... Charles Sovek

My deepest sympathy to Chuck's wife Peggy and his family for their loss. The day fellow students and I all met Charles Sovek at the Paier College of Art was a day that a "Breath of Fresh Air" came into our painting class. That was 33 years ago. He was first my teacher and throughout the years became a friend who shared his great talents with me every time we crossed paths. Thanks Chuck, you will be missed!

Dear Peggy, I extend my deepest sympathy. May your many good memories help to ease the pain of your loss. Chuck and I were in the same high school graduating class here in Pittsburgh. (West View Class of 1955) My sister and I attended one of Chuck's painting workshops in Rowayton in 2002 and enjoyed so much renewing old acquaintances. I remember how his face just beamed when he talked about you. Chuck and I had kept in touch by email since then, which I will miss. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Charles Sovek was the first workshop instructor I had here in Houston. I attribute him with really giving me the encouragement to continue to paint. He made me feel as if I could do this. "Hard work, Miles of canvas and practice practice" he said. I will never forget also the second workshop I took from him in Cape Cod. My husband and I drove up and spent the week there. Charles warned we "Texas folks" that some of the sights we might see might be a little different from what we were used to. He was right, but the week was wonderful, he was a gracious, caring teacher. He was kind and giving with his information which is apparent by his website. I still have one of the outdoor still lifes I did in that class. Charles then helped me one last time when I emailed him a couple of months ago. I had emailed to ask him about a gallery I was recently invited to join. I was not sure if he would remember me but again, he shared all the info he could with me to help. What a great loss to the art community. Charles Sovek was a great man, great artist, kind soul. He will be missed. Many condolences to his family and wife. Sincerely Judy Crowe

What a shock to hear of such a loss. I too like so many others remember Charles' enthusiasm for painting and his generosity in sharing his knowledge with a wide audience. I recall taking one of my first workshops in which I traveled from the Midwest to Taos, NM. A group of us had brought his book along since we had been practicing his lessons from the book prior to the class. I was nervous having the author/teacher for one of my first experiences as a student. That did not last long once the workshop began. He had the ability to put everyone at ease, deliver quality and quantity each day yet time to sit down to dinner and continue to listen and answer questions graciously for the entire week. I learned so much not only about the lessons on color and light but about being human and giving encouragement to others at whatever level they were at in their ability and knowledge. He will surely be missed as an educator, author, and painter but mostly as a truely memorable personality. My sincere sympathies to all who were close to him.

What a tragic irony! I've searched for years for a painter who would inspire me to pick up a brush again. I painted for years, but could never find my style, my vision. Then on June 23, 2007, I discovered the works of Charles Sovek online. My heart soared! Here was my inspiration! Within 2 days, I would learn of his sudden passing. His books, his love for his craft, and his beautiful spirit will always be God's gift to reaquaint me with canvas, and to inspire me with a loving vision. What a loss it is for you, his family, and what a blessing for you also, to have had him as husband, father, and friend. I will honor Mr. Sovek by returning to brush, paint, canvas. I've been running from it for far too long.

To Peggy and family: I have thought of Charles every day since his passing. I attended his workshop in Rockport in May, my 10th workshop with him and again had the pleasure of having lunch with with him on Friday where he spoke of family, children, grandchildren and our wives. He was so in love with family, life and art and what he felt was a gift to be able to "do this for a living." He "fired me up" each and every time I saw him. I will miss him. When travelling through this world, only a few people make a lasting mark on each of us. Charles has made that mark on me. My sincerest sympathies and best wishes to Peggy and Charles' family. Dear Mrs. Sovek, I knew Chuck when we used to paint together at his studio in Westport, along with Christy Gallagher, Howard Munce and Suzanne Lemieux. We both taught at Silvermine in the late seventies. One evening in the winter I showed up for a drawing session and the model didn't show up, and Chuck asked me if I would pose instead. So I did, and he produced a pastel. It wound up in his first book, Painting Indoors. I now live in the Hudson Valley and it's almost 30 years later. I reconnected via the internet with him about 3 years ago and always hoped I might get a chance to see him out in Truro, where my wife and I sometimes go to paint and vacation. His print" Snow Boats" is a favorite of mine and hangs in our bedroom. I am saddened for your loss and sad that I did not get to see him one more time. A terrific guy, teacher, and artist whom I always admired with the utmost respect. To everthing there is a season. Peace, Bruce Bundock
