Obituary of Joesph N. Shawinsky

Joseph N. Shawinsky, a resident of Stamford, CT, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 in Stamford. Born on April 24, 1922 in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of the late Peter and Anastasia Korda Shawinsky. He was 88. Joseph graduated from Stamford Public Schools, the University of Connecticut, N.Y.U. and Fordham University. He was an assistant principal at Dolan, Cloonan, Turn of River and Burdick Jr. High Schools. He was also a history teacher at Burdick Jr. High School and Rippowam High School. Among his students was U. S. Senator Joseph Lieberman. He served with the U. S. Navy as a Seabee in the 133rd Naval Construction Battalion. He was among the first fighting men to go ashore during the 1945 assault of Iwo Jima. In 2006 he was a featured guest in a documentary on Fox News Channel’s “War Stories with Oliver North”. He had a passion for collecting antique clocks. He is survived by his daughter Jane Fabrizio and her husband Marc, his son Robert Shawinsky and his wife Missy Cole and four grandchildren, Diana Fabrizio, Steven Fabrizio, Jeffrey Shawinsky and Gregory Shawinsky all of Stamford, CT. He is also survived by a sister, Anne Shawinsky of Rowayton, CT. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Margaret Malarkey Shawinsky, a brother Peter Shawinsky and two sisters, Rose Griffin and Tess Priest. The family will receive friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 10:15 to 11:15 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of St. Cecilia, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 11:30 AM. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church of St. Cecilia, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT 06905.
