Obituary of Joseph M. Delle Fontane

Joseph M. Delle Fontane, a 58 year resident of Darien, passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2010 at Stamford Hospital. Born on May 31, 1925 in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret Bisacca Delle Fontane. He was 85.
Mr. Delle Fontane graduated from Syracuse University. He was a 34 year former owner of Mohawk Tire and Auto Service and Mohawk Kitchen. He was a parishioner of St. Thomas More R.C. Church and a long time member of the Country Club of Darien. After retiring, he wintered in Palm Desert, CA and was a member of Ironwood Country Club. He was a dedicated volunteer of the Darien Red Cross and was Director of Rides for the Red Cross Chapter. He was also Director of the Chamber of Commerce and had a life long passion for the New York Yankees.
Mr. Delle Fontane served in the 351st Infantry Regiment with the 88th "Blue Devil" Division in the Italian Campaign with Mark Clark's 5th Army. While serving in the Division, Mr. Delle Fontane received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the Mediterranean Campaign Medal with two battle Stars and the Expert Combat Infantry Medal. His 3rd Battalion of the 31st received the Presidential Unit Citation for overtaking a strong enemy held town.
Mr. Delle Fontane is survived by his three daughters, Kathy Goossen and her husband, Marty, of Houston, TX; Susie Castle and her husband, Jeff, of Fairfield, CT and Lisa Bohdan and her husband, Bill, of Darien. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, David, Julie, Jay, Emily and Andrea and one sister, Pauline Delle Fontane of Stratford. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Beth Delle Fontane in 2003.
The family will receive friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas More R.C. Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow with full Military Honors at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien.
