Obituary of Eugene George Maher

Eugene G. Maher was born on July 19th, 1926 to Charles A. Maher and Elizabeth Zucker Maher. He grew up on Keeler's Farm on Middlesex Road in Darien and graduated from Darien High's class of '44. After graduation he enlisted in the US Air Corp and spent time in the Philippines during WW II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Eugene worked for Gristedes and then for the Darien Post Office as a Postal Clerk. He married Nancy Lee, also of Darien in 1952 and they bought a house on Chestnut St. in Darien where they lived up until 2006. He founded a cleaning service, served as the chief of Darien Fire Dept in 1960 and 1961, and was the Forest Fire Warden of Paugussett State Forest in Newtown, CT during the sixties and seventies. Eugene became an assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 50 of Darien in 1971 and remained in that capacity until the late 80's. He helped lead the scouts on three trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He enjoyed baseball, scouting, and most outdoor activities. He is survived by his wife Nancy Maher, son Brian M. Maher of Seattle, WA, son Stephen E. Maher of Seymour, CT, a nephew, Tim A. Maher in Darien, and a niece Wendy Maher in California. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas More R.C. Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien on Friday, December 3, 2010 at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Suite 159, Wilton, CT 06897.
